Windsor Park Records – Part I
Windsor Park is a great golf course near my home east of Bangkok. It’s a real challenge measuring about 6500 yards with punishing rough and lots of water to penalize inaccurate play.
I played here the last couple of weekends and shot 37 for 2 different sets of 9 holes.
So last weekend, I started at Windsor Park course B, a dark and dreary morning in Thailand, the grey skies reminded me of my homeland, England.
When the rain started I was reminded of the benefit of where I am, warm rain sure does beat the hell out of the freezing drizzle on a cold, wet autumn morning in the UK.
Anyway, to golf. My first 9 holes started with my usual drive into the bunker at the corner of the dogleg left 390 yard par 4. As often happens I was right up against the face with no shot to the green, so i splashed out to centre of fairway, then hit a 7 iron fat short of the green. Played a nice chip and a putt to escape with a bogey. Not great, but not a disaster.
Well drove into a fairway bunker on 2 but played a nice shot to centre of green, 2 putt par so now my round was well underway.
Nest short par 3, hit the green in 1 but had 25 yard putt, definate 3 putt territory. Yep, I had 3 putts. 2 over after 3.
Par 5 next, birdie opportunity, but normally I’m happy with par as water all the war down the left. 2 indifferent shots and I’m 100yards from the green in the bunker again. Good shot middle of grene 2 putts par.
Another par 3 next, very kind pin position 9 iron to 8 foot, birdie putt sunk, now were talking!
Perfect drive on the next tough par 4, with water on right on left. 9 iron to 8 feet. Birdie putt right in the centre… 2 consecutive birdies… can’t remember that happening before… now where did i leave those turning pro papers.
Par 5 next, another good birdie chance. Good drive, perfect layup. 90 yards to green(or so i thought), slightly uphill. Hit a perfect wedge right on line, thinking of 3 birdies when it’s in the air, but it comes up 15 yards short in the long rough short. Argh! Fluffed chip. Then up and down for bogey. Disaster avoided but back over par.
2 more pars and we have a 37. Record breaker!
The bad news for me was I couldn’t keep things going on the esecond 9 and shot 44 for the last 9 holes for a 81
