Windsor Park Records – Part II
Back to Windsor Park the week after my 37 for Course B. This time playing courses C/D. Some consider this a tougher setup to A/B but I consider it just different. I also prefer to play it as there is no slowdown of play due to people joining the second 9 holes. The holes are a bit longer, but I think the layout is a little more forgiving and the rough is not quite as penalizing.
This was my first round with my Nike Sumo 9.5 (not the square one). Shaft is a ProForce 65g in stiff.
Solid start, fairway bunker, 2 on, 3 putts for a bogey start. Par on number 2, but then made mental error, underclubbed on 3 and ended with bad lie in face of the bunker. Out to fringe, pitch a little long, left my putt 2 inches short and finished with a double bogey. Not a happy camper.
Average drive off the heel, blocked my 5 iron right, left with a very tough pitch. Went through the green. Pitch from the fringe 9 foot past. Putt missed another double.
Another double followed on the par 5 after a bad drive and a bad recovery in the water. Nothing good happened after that, the tough par 5 that was number 9 today, was nearly reached in 2. I was in greenside bunker, but another bad lie caused me to make a mess of the bunker shot, 2 fluffed chips later and I had a double bogey. Out in 47.
So since my handicap with this groups was 11 I’d used up all my shots on the first 9, time to kick it up a gear!
Long par 3 next, 200 yards downhill into wind. Chose my 1 hybrid. Hit it sweet. Finished 7 foot from the pin, certainty for the closest to the pin competition (or so I thought). Putt was tricky downhill right to left with 1 foot of borrow, didn’t make it. Still par is heading in the right direction. Birdie chance of 18 feet on next, again just mised but another easy par. Another up and down for a par on the next and was in the groove. Par 5 next, 2 good shots a sandwedge to 10feet and a good putt. Birdie! Par 3 140 yards next, 8 iron to 2.5 feet, contrived to miss the putt aaaargh. At least this won closest to pin.
A perfect drive on the par 4 next ended in bunker, was given wrong yardage and went into bunker over green with a shocking plugged downhill lie. Got it out but didn’t get up and down and a double… momentum lost. Finished with 3 pars, escaped on the last after finding water with my second with up and down from 150yard. Happy camper, 37 again, and ended up with a prize with a gross 84 net 73. Next week let’s see if i can put the 2 37’s back to back!
